New turbine control adds to transparency and performance
Kanteleen Voima is located in Haapavesi, some 515 km north of Helsinki – close to the median point of Finland. With a capacity of 154 megawatts, it is the world’s largest peat-fired condensing power plant. Its annual electricity production is about one terawatt hour, and its average annual utilization rate amounts to 5200 hours. The efficiency rate exceeds 40%, which is good for a condensing plant located inland. The plant employs about 40 people.

Thanks to good transparency, the users now are fully aware what is happening in the turbine, as if blindfolds had been removed from their eyes. Both temperature control – one of the main challenges with this particular turbine – and other controls are now light years better than they were earlier.
With better control and model predictive calculations it has been possible to speed up and optimize start-ups. In fact, this led to some benefits that weren’t even planned. For example, oil consumption at start-ups has been halved, which in turn leads to significant annual cost savings.
