Metso-supplied Finland’s largest pellet-fired heating plant produces environmentally friendly energy in Tampere

Metso Corporation’s press release on May 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. local time

Finland’s largest pellet-fired heating plant, which was supplied by Metso to Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy, Tampere, is based on a technological solution that is the first of its kind in the country. It will bring new opportunities to gear the structure of Finnish district heat production towards the goals of sustainable development. Previously, peak load plants have been using fossil fuels because there was no other technology available.

The plant is mainly fired with wood pellets and its heat output is around 33 MW. The plant has replaced some of the capacity of the oil- and gas-fired boiler plants and has thus helped substantially reduce the CO2 emissions from the production of district heat. The plant has been producing environmentally friendly energy in Tampere since December.

“The plant will help us to secure the competitiveness of district heat, lower CO2 emissions and improve our delivery reliability in the southern region of Tampere,” says Managing Director Antti-Jussi Halminen from Tampereen Energiantuotanto.

Metso’s delivery comprised a complete turn-key boiler plant solution and Metso DNA automation system. The new plant operates unmanned with remote monitoring from the main control room of the Lielahti power plant. By using the reliable automation technology, the operators are able to flexibly control the district heat production process and quickly respond to changes. The technology used at the plant is based on the pellet fuel being pulverized in separate grinding mills and burned in a pulverized combustion boiler. The start-up and load control of the combustion process is remarkably high and the pulverized fuel allows for clean, energy efficient and flexible heat generation. Pulverized pellet combustion is new to Finland, but Metso has been using it in Sweden on a smaller scale.

“This was a major delivery for Metso, as it is the first reference using this technology for district heat generation on such a large scale. The Bioheat RampUp plant delivered by us enables the use of pellets and oil, simultaneously in any proportion or separately, in one and the same boiler, which is operated unmanned,” says Jussi Orhanen, Director, Heat & Power Plants, Power business line, Metso.

According to Orhanen, the solution is also an excellent option for industry presently using heavy fuel oil for generating process steam.

Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy, a subsidiary of Tampere Power Utility, is responsible for the group’s electricity and district heating production, maintenance and development. Increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources is part of Tampere Power Utility’s strategy.

Metso to modernize automation and field instrumentation at Helsingin Energia’s Salmisaari power plants in Helsinki, Finland

Metso Corporation’s press release on May 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. local time

Unified automation and accurate process controls contribute to better overall process management of the Salmisaari power plants

Metso will modernize the automation and field instrumentation at Helsingin Energia’s Salmisaari A and B power plants in Helsinki, Finland. The investment will ensure high availability and safety at the plants long into the future. In choosing the supplier, the company emphasized overall best value for money and fulfillment of tight technical requirements.

New automation will replace the existing automation system from 1984 at Plant B, which produces electricity and district heat, and the system from 1986 at Plant A, which produces district heat. In the future, the plants’ main fuel of coal will be replaced with pellets that will account for a 5 – 10% share at first.

“By utilizing modern control methods, it is possible to reach better process control,” says Heikki Mylläri, Sales Director, Automation, Metso.

Metso’s extensive turnkey delivery will consist of two Metso DNA automation systems, field instrumentation, a safety interlocking system, replacement of programmable logic controls, field engineering, an emissions reporting tool to meet present directives, installation, testing and commissioning. Modernization at Plant B is scheduled to start in May 2014 with startup in September 2014. Plant A will be modernized in 2015.

Metso has earlier delivered automation to Helsinki Energia’s Kellosaari backup power plant, Salmisaari coal storage inside a cliff and water treatment, which all will now be integrated into the new automation. . The entity will utilize the reporting system earlier supplied by Metso. In the future, all power plants and processes will be operated from the same control room with uniform user interfaces.

The order is included in Automation’s first quarter 2013 orders received.

As one of the largest energy companies in Finland, Helsingin Energia supplies electric energy to about 400,000 customers in Finland and covers more than 90% of the heat demand in the capital city with district heat.

The Automation segment’s process automation and flow control solutions meet the growing needs of Metso’s customer industries to improve production process efficiency as raw materials and energy sources become scarcer and their costs increase. Our global network of service experts delivers business solutions to our customers that improve their productivity, lower risks and optimize costs.

Metso Corporation’s press release on April 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. local time

Domtar has successfully started up a commercial-scale LignoBoost™ lignin separation plant at its Plymouth, North Carolina mill, in the USA. This is the first commercial installation of a LignoBoost plant in the world and the technology is supplied by Metso.

The LignoBoost plant is integrated with the pulp mill and separates and collects lignin from the pulping liquor. This provides the Plymouth NC mill with numerous benefits. Lignin is a high-quality bio-based alternative to fossil fuel based materials. Separation of a portion of the mill’s total lignin production also off-loads the recovery boiler, and allows an increase in pulp production capacity.

Domtar’s production of BioChoice™ lignin began in February with a targeted rate of 75 tons a day. A wide range of applications and markets for BioChoice lignin are being developed including fuels, resins, and thermoplastics. Having lignin available in large quantities and high quality from the Domtar plant will help develop the future lignin market for the industry.

“The technology has been developed by Innventia in Sweden, in association with Chalmers University of Technology. Metso purchased it and is furthering the development. We continue to work together to refine the technology to develop new lignin applications in partnership for current and future customers. LignoBoost has generated a great deal of interest in the pulp & paper industry globally and this is a major breakthrough for all parties involved in this first-of-a-kind project,” says Gene Christiansen, Senior Manager, Business Development Innovations at Metso’s Power business line for North America.

Note: BioChoice is a trademark of Domtar. LignoBoost is a trademark of Metso.

Metso Corporation’s press release on April 24, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. local time

Metso sells its shares of joint venture company to Shanghai Electric Corporation

Metso has entered into an agreement to sell its shares of its joint venture company Shanghai-Neles Jamesbury Valve Co., Ltd (SNJ) to Shanghai Electric International Economic & Trading Co., Ltd (SEIC), which is the other joint venture partner. At the same time, good cooperation continues between Metso, SNJ and SEIC as companies have agreed several future cooperation areas.

Metso will move its Jamesbury® valves production from SNJ to Metso Technology Center in Shanghai. The change from a joint-venture based operation to directly controlled Jamesbury business is in line with Metso’s long-term strategy to strengthen its valve production and service capabilities in growing markets. Chinese market is world’s second largest valve market with significant growth potential. After the transaction Metso is able to independently develop and grow its valves solutions portfolio and offer more comprehensive customer packages.

“This transaction emphasizes the significance of the Chinese market for Metso and Metso’s commitment to increase its presence near the customers,“ states Perttu Louhiluoto, President, Automation, Metso.

He continues: “The Joint Venture with SEIC was an important part of our earlier growth market strategy. Now our focus is in building own presence in these markets. I am particularly delighted that while we have exited the joint venture, we have agreed on future cooperation with SNJ.”

SNJ was established 1990 to produce valves and actuators under Jamesbury product name for Chinese markets. Metso and SEIC owned both 50% of SNJ. SNJ employs currently 284 people. The final closing of the transaction requires regulatory approvals by Chinese authorities and is estimated to take place during the second quarter of 2013.

Metso’s Pulp, Paper and Power business to initiate a cost reduction program to improve its competitiveness

Metso Corporation’s stock exchange release on April 23, 2013 at 12:15 p.m. local time

Metso’s Pulp, Paper and Power business is to initiate a global cost competitiveness program to adapt to changes in the marketplace and improve profitability. The program will target an annual cost reduction of approximately EUR 100 million by 2016.
“The program is aimed at improving our cost competitiveness in a market that is continuing to experience major structural changes,” says Pasi Laine, President of Metso’s Pulp, Paper and Power business. “We are also aiming to improve our profitability with the help of the program.”
Permanent structural changes in Metso’s Pulp, Paper and Power business’ operating environment have impacted its operations and undermined its competitiveness and profitability. The underlying reasons for the situation lie in the continuing downturn in demand for paper machinery and the growing trend towards cheaper technology solutions.
“New communications technologies are continuing to weaken the consumption of printing and writing paper grades and have been reflected in a slow-down in the market for new paper machines. A lighter cost structure and greater flexibility will be essential to competing more effectively as we move forward,” Pasi Laine says.
“In the power generating sector, we are also experiencing a slower investment cycle in Europe and a significant decrease in demand in North America due to low energy prices resulting from the increased use of shale gas. We must take action to reduce our overall costs if we are to be able to reach our targeted profitability level on new orders,” he adds.
Planning of the program will now begin in all of Metso Pulp, Paper and Power's organisations, at all locations. As planning continues and becomes more concrete, information will be made available to employees and stakeholders in due course.

Metso’s pulp, paper and power professionals specialize in processes, machinery, equipment, services, paper machine clothing and filter fabrics. Our offering and experience cover the entire process life cycle including new production lines, rebuilds and services.
