Outokumpu Technology nominated as contractor for a large sinter plant in Brazil

Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (CSA) and Outokumpu Technology have entered into a Letter of Understanding appointing Outokumpu Technology as the Nominated Contractor for the design and supply of a turnkey iron ore sinter plant CSA plans to build in connection with its greenfield steel plant in Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

CSA is a joint venture of ThyssenKrupp Steel as major share holder and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). CSA's new steel plant is scheduled to start operation in 2009 and produce five million tons of steel products, mainly for the export to Europe and the NAFTA region.

For Outokumpu Technology this project will have a similar scope and size as the Samarco project, the world's biggest pellet indurating furnace that Outokumpu Technology is currently building in Brazil.

Besides the plant for CSA Outokumpu Technology is currently implementing four sinter plants in India, adding in total 15 million tons to the world's annual sintering capacity as well as five pelletizing plant projects in Sweden, Brazil and Iran, adding 30 million tons per year to the world's annual iron pellet production.
