Outotec delivers technology for the expansion of Outokumpu's ferrochrome plant in Finland
Outotec will deliver sintering and ferrochrome smelting technology for the expansion of Outokumpu's ferrochrome plant in Tornio, Finland. The new sintering plant and smelter will double Outokumpu's ferrochrome production capacity. The contract value is approximately EUR 45 million.
Outotec's scope includes engineering of the sintering plant and the smelter as well as delivery of key process equipment. The new sintering plant will treat annually 600,000 tonnes of chromite concentrate to pellets to be used as feed to a 100 MW ferrochrome furnace, which will be the world's largest and most efficient furnace of its kind. The deliveries will take place during 2011 and in the first half of 2012.
"Outokumpu's Tornio plant is one of the most modern and efficient stainless steel production facilities in the world. We have been involved in the technology development and our close cooperation with Outokumpu continues now when doubling the production capacity of the ferrochrome plant using our technology. Thanks to its energy efficiency and environmental benefits the Outotec® Ferrochrome Process is second to none," says Outotec CEO Pertti Korhonen.
