Leading for safety
We promote safety leadership and personal commitment to safety. Safety-related programs are implemented with audience-specific materials and through a train-the-trainer approach to ensure the entire organization is involved.
Metso has a global safety reporting system that allows employees to raise safety concerns and show their personal commitment to safety. Proactive measures, such as risk observations, are expected at all levels of the organization. Managers and supervisors are expected to have continuous safety conversations to promote safety in a positive manner. All employees and contractors not only have the right but also the obligation to refuse and to report any unsafe work. We emphasize the incident investigation process and corrective actions. All serious accidents are reviewed by top management to ensure proper investigations and corrective actions are completed. Internal and external audits to monitor the level of safety are also conducted on a regular basis.
Metso's fatality prevention program
One of the main focus areas of Metso’s health and safety approach is the fatality prevention program. The purpose of the program is to prevent fatalities and severe injuries through a standardized approach to control the highest safety risks. These risks are mitigated in a range of ways, including with safety equipment and tools, working procedures, continuous training, and leadership involvement. The fatality prevention program includes high-level safety directives that set out detailed health and safety requirements for all businesses.

QEHS policies and sustainability governance
Metso’s commitment to work safety is set out in our EHS and Quality Policies. Metso’s EHS Policy states our intent to manage hazards and reduce risks to create a safe and healthy workplace, and to respect the human rights of its own employees, contractors and customers. The policy underlines expectations for clear target setting for health and safety and for continuously developing the management systems and ways of working to achieve better safety results. We are committed through our Quality Policy to prevent and minimize safety incidents and environmental impacts at its own operations and from the products and services delivered to customers. Both policies are available here.
Our integrated management system follows best international practices and ISO standards: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental) & ISO 45001 (H&S). It integrates all of our systems and processes into one complete framework, enabling us to work as a single unit with unified objectives. We are annually certified by an external body to ensure that our work meets all legal, directive and ISO standard requirements

Product safety
Safety is the license to operate in the industries that we serve. Metso's products are designed to meet all the relevant standards, norms and directives in the respective delivery countries. Our products are delivered with the appropriate information and instructions to ensure safe operation, services and maintenance. In addition, we offer a wide range of life cycle services to ensure that all our products in use will continue to meet existing and future requirements throughout their life cycle. Safety of our products is one of the key drivers in our research and development work.
Whether it’s a standard product or a customer-specific combination of technologies and services, we are committed to ensuring customer satisfaction by offering consistent high quality. Product and operator safety is a critical matter to us and our customers. Legal requirements, standards and directives, such as EN ISO, OSHA and CE, underpin our approach to product safety.
Product safety plays a role throughout Metso’s product development process, taking into account regulations, customer requirements, our product specifications and safety risk analyses. These requirements also extend to procurement and manufacturing processes as well as installation and commissioning. Final compliance checks are done at the customer site which means that our equipment and aftermarket people must work in close collaboration in these projects.
Increasing safety at customer operations
Our safety promise doesn’t end with the product. We have a range of
solutions to eliminate environmental, health and safety risks at customer operations and improve customers’ operational performance over the life-time of our products.
- Upgrades and modernizations: Machine modifications that make day-to-day operation and regular
maintenance safer, e.g., reducing weight, removing pinch points and removing the need for labor. - Process optimization: Remote process monitoring limits human-machine interaction for increased safety while still ensuring process performance targets are reached and maintained.
- Repairs: Performing tear down and rebuilds to find potential issues and to remedy them before the machine or operators are at risk.
- Life Cycle Services (LCS): Machines installed and adjusted to correct industry safety benchmarks. Best practices shared from hundreds of LCS contracts ensure safe shutdowns and servicing.
