Today, the mining industry is facing several serious challenges. Declining ore grades. Water scarcity. Limited access to energy. Lack of skilled labor. Stricter regulations. In addition to dealing with these challenges, industry leaders also need to focus on producing minerals sustainably, while maintaining profitability. In some cases, even obtaining the license to operate may be problematic and require continued efforts.

In this vlog, you will meet some of our senior leaders and get their perspective on the green transition.

  • What are the trends in the industry?

  • What common challenges do miners face ─ and how to solve them?

  • What will happen in the next few years?

  • What does it take to make this transition?

  • What impact will digitalization bring?

You will also get some useful tips on how to tackle these challenges and meet your sustainability goals.

First up is Heikki Metsälä, President, Consumables. Metso has, under his leadership, taken major leaps in improving sustainability in its own operations.

Cutting CO2 emissions by over 70% in a large global company in a short time ─ how is that possible?

For future generations, and to be trustworthy in the eyes of customers and other stakeholders, we need to make sure our own backyard is clean. Our sustainability mission and targets are clear ─ and we take them very seriously. Metso has taken the lead and worked closely with suppliers and made significant investments in its own supply chain, to make it as sustainable as possible. The numbers speak for themselves ─ the CO2 emissions in our own operations have reduced by 73% since 2019, and 25.6% of Metso supplier-spend is with companies who are committed to science-based targets.

How was it done? What was accomplished and what were some of the biggest challenges faced?

Heikki Metsälä explores this topic in the video below.

Navigating water and energy challenges in mining

With mining being one of the world's most water- and energy-intensive industries, managing the use of these resources is crucial. The fact that the majority of mines are located in areas experiencing severe water scarcity, makes lack of water a great risk to the mining sector and dealing with it is vital.

Cristian Fadic, VP Sales and Service in Chile, provides useful tips on how to save water and energy in the video below.
