Metso Research and Testing: Exploring innovations and achievements at Macon Rock Laboratory in France

At Metso, our commitment to innovation and excellence in research and testing has led to some of the most fascinating projects in the industry. Here, we delve into some of the most unique cases, pilots, and studies we've worked on, the challenges we face, and the exciting future plans for our Macon Rock Laboratory in France.

Unique cases and studies

Some of the unique cases we have recently been working on at our Macon R&T Center, include performance evaluation for new cone crushers, and testing new applications for HRC8 and the NP Series.

Our team in Macon has implemented new kinematic designs on the Nordberg® HP200e™, HP350e™, HP450e™, and HP600e™ models, enhancing performance and efficiency. Additionally, the introduction of a "narrow fraction" cavity profile for the HPe Series™ has optimized the crushing process. Continuous development and testing of new cone crusher models are ongoing, with a goal to meet evolving industry needs.

We have also been testing new applications for the HRC™ 8 high-pressure roll crusher. The HRC 8 has been successfully tested for concrete recycling, effectively separating aggregates and cement. Metso has also been testing the HRC 8's capability to process slag produced by the steel industry. In addition, the HRC 8 has demonstrated efficiency in recovering valuable aggregates from quarry waste.

Furthermore, we are exploring new applications for the Nordberg® NP Series™. The NP Series has been tested for efficient glass recycling processes and its performance in recycling asphalt materials has been evaluated.

Our rigorous testing phases have built significant trust with our customers, leading to several successful orders.

Overcoming testing challenges

Testing isn’t always without challenges. Some common issues can include obtaining sufficient sample quantities, ensuring correct protocols are followed for sample collection and the usage of high-quality sealed bags to transport samples in case of moisture measurement requests. Gathering comprehensive data takes effort as many factors are included, such as sample reference and origin, machine settings, power consumption, and wear part conditions.

Metso keeps customers involved throughout the testing process. We overcome possible testing challenges by engaging in open discussion with process experts, product managers, sales representatives, and customers to understand expectations before and during testing. Using our mobile laboratory, we perform initial analyses on the customer sites, optimizing machine settings in real-time. Test results from the customer are compared with the results from the Metso laboratories and the customer is invited to visit our laboratory. Finally, detailed test reports are provided to the customer, always focusing on the customer needs while interpreting the results.

What makes Metso Research & Testing capabilities unique?

Our R&T capabilities are distinguished by an experienced team working closely with process experts and product managers. We provide a quick response with rapid analysis and professional report delivery. Our Macon R&T Center has the ability to analyze samples according to British, DIN, ASTM, and GOST standards. We offer comprehensive testing, including abrasiveness, crushability, solid and bulk density measurements, and are equipped with jaw and cone crushers to reduce particle size, washing and drying capacities, and more. Metso also provides opportunities for customers to visit our laboratory and showroom of minerals from all over the world.

We’ve recently optimized our Macon laboratory layout to create even safer and more efficient working environment. All the laboratory equipment has been calibrated and is monitored on regular basis, according to ISO9001 standards. As we look ahead, we are developing a new area specifically dedicated to screening tests.  We are also exploring a small-scale testing capacity for recycling applications, using HRC or AC.

At Metso, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation and excellence in research and testing, ensuring we meet and exceed the needs of our customers and the industry.
