Leading edge advanced control solutions for mineral processing (Option 1)

Advanced Process Control (APC) is well established and utilized by most main mining actors for mineral processing. There are still some braking factors in further developing  the spread of that technology, such as:

• The specific skillset and mindset change required at site Operations
• The investment (and care) that is sometimes insufficient on the necessary instrumentation
• The intrinsic outcome of the solutions, which sometimes shows deteriorated performance or shows continuously sitting below legit expectations.

The above-listed points are often the combined consequence of low ambition and low expertise while defining and implementing the control strategy.

New providers are raising in the APC world by promoting buzz technology with the idea that they can supplement an existing solution to fill any gap. We in Metso Outotec do also consider some of those AI-based tools as promising additions, but we make a strong point on the fact that underperforming APC can just not be considered as “advanced”, nor good to use with foreign patches, until whatever flaw that may exist is understood and fixed within the control strategy. That’s crucial for the comfort of use of the solution, thus for the adoption by the operators,  and of course for the sustained performance.
